Necron First Build

This is my first go at a Necron army for 2000 points. It's what I'm currently building. There is nothing too flashy or ground breaking in it - I'm using it to get used to playing them before I try any real tricks.

2000 points

HQ - 740
2x
Necron Overlord w/ Warscythe - 100
- Catacomb Command Barge w/ Gauss Cannon- 80

2x
Royal Court
Harbinger of Destruction w/ Solar Pulse - 55
2 x Harbinger of Destruction - 70
Harbinger of the Storm w/ Lightning Field - 35
Harbinger of Transmogrification - 30

Troops - 550
2x
6 Necron Warriors - 78
- Ghost Ark - 115

3x
7 Immortals w/ Tesla Carbine - 119

Elite - 300
2x
Triarch Stalker - 150

Fast Attack - 120
2x
4 Canoptek Scarab - 60

Heavy Support - 290
2x
Annihilation Platform w/ Gauss Cannon - 90

Canoptek Spyder w/ Fabricator Array - 60
- Canoptek Spyder - 50

General Strategy
SurfLords do their thing. 2 Destro Crypteks go into the Arks and one Immortal squad. 1 Lightning Field and 1 Tremorstave Cryptek go into each of the other two Immortal sqauds that will screen, slow down, and intercept assaulters. Scarabs will grow and either set out vehicle hunting or stay back and grow more to act as additional screen, as situation demands. Spyders will grow scarabs and act as counter assault - Fabricator Array is really just for wound allocation parlor tricks, but will use if it seems like the thing to do at the time. Stalkers and Annihilation Platforms just shoot things.

Thoughts
Not sure how the Lightning Field and Tremorstave will work, but I wanted to give it a shot for grins. This army doesn't have a whole lot of tricks, but once I get used to it - I'll start throwing in some special character combos just to see how they play out. I still don't know if Imotek is dirty pool, or situational at best.

Any suggestions? Things you like/hate? This will probably be the next tournament army I take, with perhaps some moderate tweaking as I find the strong/weak points.

  1. Hi,

The list looks good, but the HQ and elites make it a bit small for 2000 points. How about scaling back some of the duplication so you can try out more things, eg. only use one overlord so you can try out a destroyer lord, and then maybe lose one stalker to try out some wraiths.

Going down to one overlord would mean going down to only 1 court, so I'd recommend keeping 4 HoDestructions (one with a pulse) and use the last cryptek slot to try out the others game by game. Also consider a HoDespair with a Veil to add some more mobility to the list.

I'm looking forward to reading how you get on, good luck.

  2. I don't mean to imply that I don't have a clue about the Necron codex - just that this is my first pass at the new version.

Duplication is something that I don't think I will ever shake. It's what allows you to make sure that what you want is available to you. And it provides focus to an army, rather than the "one of everything" approach.

I'm also not as sold on the wraiths as a lot of people are. I still see them dying to bolter fire... a lot. Plus, whips only affect models in base, so models that are supporting will still get their full strikes at initiative.

As far as Veil is concerned - I'm not ready to go that route. Perhaps if I wanted Deathmarks I could see a use.
