You know, I could have taken getting beat, but we weren't beat. We lost. Mostly due to this guy. We will be burning effigies of Williams this week, instead of gaming...

Okay, so converting 1 for 13 third downs didn't help either. But we still would've pulled out the vic without those two muffs. "Lefou, I'm afraid I've been thinking"
"A dangerous pastime..."
"I know"

I've read some people talking about Necrons in assault and how weak they are. The key to beating them appears to be, as Jean Luc Picard would say, "Engage." Others like the surflord tricks (but with D3 attacks, they really are just tricks), or Destroyer Lords - but the loss of the Court seems so bad.

Can it be done?
Yes... Kind of.

Disclaimer: This is an exercise in taking an army against its grain. This isn't meant to be a serious army... somewhat like my initial NippleWing, it will do well against certain opponents, and die horribly to others.

I doubt you're going to find anything here that you didn't already know - but I plan on talking about a couple variants and what to use.

What's good in assault for Necrons?

Command Barge Lords (pseudo - not true assault)

Destroyer Lords

Flayed Ones - kind of.

Wraiths

Scarabs

Spyders

What looks good in assault, but really aren't?

C'tan Shard - way too expensive, not well enough protected.

Lychguards - can be a decent anchor, but more expensive than terminators without as much protection.

Inherent drawbacks to a Necron assault list?

Initiative 2, of course.

No Troop unit capable of assault - or even really surviving an assault if they get caught.

What can I do to enhance my assault capabilities?
Several things - all of them pretty expensive for the return, but since we're going against the grain anyhow, don't feel too bad if you sub one in. For my purposes, I'm going to go vanilla.

Imotekh Stormlord/Chronometron combo - gives you night fighting protection, weakens opponent with storm strikes, and makes your Flayed Ones arrive via Deep Strike better.

Orikan/C'tan Worldscape/Cryptek Tremorstave combo - makes enemy movement hurt themselves

Nemesor Zahndrekh - remove special rules from opposing units, give to yours

Lords go in with the Wraiths, Spyders build the Scarabs for 1-2 turns while advancing. Spiders and Wraiths built for wound allocation shenanigans. Flayed Ones can Outflank or Deep Strike to go after soft targets.

I plan on proxying the crap out of this army this weekend - I'll let you know how it goes.

This is my first go at a Necron army for 2000 points. It's what I'm currently building. There is nothing too flashy or ground breaking in it - I'm using it to get used to playing them before I try any real tricks.

2000 points

HQ - 740
2x
Necron Overlord w/ Warscythe - 100
- Catacomb Command Barge w/ Gauss Cannon- 80

2x
Royal Court
Harbinger of Destruction w/ Solar Pulse - 55
2 x Harbinger of Destruction - 70
Harbinger of the Storm w/ Lightning Field - 35
Harbinger of Transmogrification - 30

Troops - 550
2x
6 Necron Warriors - 78
- Ghost Ark - 115

3x
7 Immortals w/ Tesla Carbine - 119

Elite - 300
2x
Triarch Stalker - 150

Fast Attack - 120
2x
4 Canoptek Scarab - 60

Heavy Support - 290
2x
Annihilation Platform w/ Gauss Cannon - 90

Canoptek Spyder w/ Fabricator Array - 60
- Canoptek Spyder - 50

General Strategy
SurfLords do their thing. 2 Destro Crypteks go into the Arks and one Immortal squad. 1 Lightning Field and 1 Tremorstave Cryptek go into each of the other two Immortal sqauds that will screen, slow down, and intercept assaulters. Scarabs will grow and either set out vehicle hunting or stay back and grow more to act as additional screen, as situation demands. Spyders will grow scarabs and act as counter assault - Fabricator Array is really just for wound allocation parlor tricks, but will use if it seems like the thing to do at the time. Stalkers and Annihilation Platforms just shoot things.

Thoughts
Not sure how the Lightning Field and Tremorstave will work, but I wanted to give it a shot for grins. This army doesn't have a whole lot of tricks, but once I get used to it - I'll start throwing in some special character combos just to see how they play out. I still don't know if Imotek is dirty pool, or situational at best.

Any suggestions? Things you like/hate? This will probably be the next tournament army I take, with perhaps some moderate tweaking as I find the strong/weak points.stjohn70http://www.blogger.com/profile/03421839277298328486noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7724878057661010394.post-52079770649329426532012-01-16T15:36:00.003-07:002012-01-16T16:09:54.884-07:00Necron FAQ Review

As usual, some really obvious questions got answered, some good questions got answered, and some were left untouched.

Clarifications of Note:

Everliving = Reanimation Protocols for purposes of Resurrection Orb (and probably anything else that matters)

Can add scarabs to an engaged unit

Clarified # of models hit by a Death Ray - still can't believe people thought it hit every model in the unit.

Mindshackle Scarabs can cause model to hit itself. Nice. At the same time, IC's get a little protection in that they can hit their accompanying unit.

Sad that they had to put it in, but glad to see that they state that the Abyssal Staff uses Ld for purposes of instant death.

Lance weapons treat Quantum Shielded vehicles as 12. I could have seen this go either way - but this is the ruling I think is most fair.

Tesla Destructors can't Arc if the target unit was destroyed. Interesting. I hadn't even considered this. I like it though.

You can take multiple types of Harbingers in a single Court! And you can attach a model to a unit from each Court. This makes the Harbinger of Eternity for the Imotekh combo not such a throw away... but seriously, don't use this combo.

IC can Sweep Attack one unit and shoot/assault another. While I realize this is according to how the rules actually are written, I was hoping that it would lock the IC to targeting just that unit. This is kind of a toss up, I don't like the way they ruled, but I'm glad they put it in here.

Scarabs have to be placed in coherency with another scarab that wasn't created this turn. Yay, for no conga lines!

This just in from the general rulebook FAQ: can't use fire points to draw LoS for non-shooting powers/abilities... Does this mean Anrakyr can't use MitM while on a command barge?? Oh boy - another can of worms opened up potentially with this one.

Missed:

Death Ray part 2. So they clarified the # of models hit in a unit. What about: Can you hit models that are out of Line of Sight from the firing model? Where is cover drawn from - line or PoV of firing model? And again, what armor facing on vehicles is hit - line or PoV?

Other than that one big question about the Death Ray, I'm pretty satisfied with the FAQ. So what do you think? Do you like the rulings? Any that you think they really missed and still need an answer to?stjohn70http://www.blogger.com/profile/03421839277298328486noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7724878057661010394.post-12583028320372620432012-01-15T00:08:00.003-07:002012-01-15T00:08:34.152-07:00Go 49ers!

Oh how sweet it is! I've been a fan of the 49ers since I was a wee lad of 10, watching them beat the Bengals in SupowerBowl XVI. I missed The Catch in that NFC championship game, but I've got to say, man did this game equal that game against Dallas 30 years ago.

Suddenly I'm a Giants fan - because I know we can beat them at home. Whether we can go to Lambeau and win...

But I tell you this, many more games that are this close and have last minute lead changes, and I'm going to end up like the hypno-therapist from Office Space: clutching my chest and collapsing.
Whew! The 6th Edition "leaked" rulebook is not real. Thank goodness.

Most years, my local gaming store holds an Escalation Event that goes for three months. I'm going to explain some rules, and then ask for some help/insight if you have any.

The purpose of an Escalation is to start new armies, or bring back old ones that perhaps have been sitting on a shelf. Participation is free, and models are not required to be painted - this is really just a modification for friendly play.
I have only played the 600 so far. But at that level, the game really seems to favor shooty armies. Yes, we reduced the table size to 4'x4', but the assault armies so far don't seem to stand a chance. Is this something that you have to suck up at that point level, and know that you'll balance out when the points increase? Perhaps my two games plus the four I witnessed weren't enough of a sample, and I just came away with the wrong impression... What do you think?

Ah, first post in fourteen months... yeah. I don't even know if anyone is still going to read this, but I think I'm putting this up more for my mental health than anything. This is about my baby steps returning to the game.

For those that don't know, I am no longer involved in any way, shape or form with Yes the Truth Hurts. The fallout from that caused me to pretty much abandon the hobby for over a year. I haven't played in a while, and really haven't followed much either. Grey Knights and Dark Eldar have both come and gone, and I am mostly clueless as to those codexes.
All is not lost, however. I have found my happy place once again. In a random fit of expenditure, I grabbed a bunch of Necron stuff as a Christmas present to myself, and have been building in a bit of a frenzy (more to come on that later this week).

More importantly, I played my first games in a very long time this past weekend. 600 points. Yeehaw! Actually, it's an Escalation League that the local game store holds for three months at the beginning of most years. It goes at 600/900/1200, for a month at each level - with some FOC restrictions so that you're not bringing Land Raiders at 600 points. It was fun to get the games in and get a bit of a refresher on rules.

After playing, I was reminded of my previous post about Winning the Game. I focused on List Design (but really, at 600 points - there's not a lot to do), and completely forgot about most everything else. Granted, I'm just learning the army, so Familiarity is something to come - but I forgot about objectives and going for them early, so I drew the first game even though I had a clear advantage in the game.

But importantly, I had a good time. I played one game with my buddy Don, and another with RJ, someone I had not previously met. And in having a good time, I am now desiring to play more games. I think that playing to enjoy the game is more important that winning. Winning is fun, too; don't get me wrong. Right now I'm enjoying myself and getting to learn things about the game again (like: why psyfleman dreads are so stupidly good).

I'll be posting later on my build plan for my Necron army as it goes to 2000 points. I think that a couple reviews of the Ghost/Doomsday Ark and Catacomb/Annihilation Barge kits will be forthcoming as well.
This week...
Probably...stjohn70http://www.blogger.com/profile/03421839277298328486noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7724878057661010394.post-7353956368732228892010-11-15T11:19:00.000-07:002010-11-15T11:19:49.540-07:00Review: Towers of Midnight

I finished reading Book 13 of the Wheel of Time series on Saturday, Nov 6 - but I've delayed reviewing it because I had to go back and re-digest some parts of it before coming to you.

For my background with the series, you can read my review of The Gathering Storm.
For the first time, I went back and reread the series. All of it. I knew ToM was coming out in November, so in March of this year, I started back over with The Eye of the World and read them all, including A New Spring (the prequel) between books 4 & 5. When I read The Gathering Storm for the first time, I had to go back a lot - trying to refresh who characters were and why they were important... and I didn't want to have to do that again. I found something fairly unique - the Wheel of Time series gets better when reading a second time. In my first go through, I was often frustrated by the slowness of the plot (books 5-7), how it kept opening up new plotlines when they should be closing off to help the series come to a conclusion (books 4-9), just how little actually happens in the book (book 10), or most of all - how frustratingly long it would take the author to come out with the next book! In my second time through, I was able to enjoy a lot more of the fore-shadowing that was going on and really felt none of the frustrations from the first time through.

So how did Towers of Midnight stack up: Was it as good as The Gathering Storm? Did in bring up any of those old frustrations?
The answer to both, is Yes.

That may be puzzling, but let me give you a bit of a background on the book. Robert Jordan originally planned for there to only be one more book: A Memory of Light. But when Brandon Sanderson got into it, he quickly realized that AMoL would be a 2000+ page behemoth, and at Tor and Jordan's widow's behest, he split it into three books.
The problem: there isn't really a place to split the book into thirds. There is what-happens-before-Tarmon-Gaiden and Tarmon-Gaidon (the Last Battle). Sanderson chose to focus on Rand and Egwene's stories in TGS, and in ToM he focuses on Matt and Perrin's arcs.
It can get a tad confusing, because it still jumps some to Rand & Egwene's stories, which are happening after the events of TGS - but then when it's back to Perrin, the timeline is back during the events of TGS.

Perrin comes off as the real hero of this book. He finally stops his internal whining and gets his. His storyline is engaging, has drama, sorrow, victory, and you can almost feel his ta'veren pull on you through the pages.
Matt's story... was okay. It left me wanting more. In TGS, some people complained that Sanderson didn't get Matt's "voice." In ToM, it feels more like Matt, but his story doesn't feel as compelling to me. Even the main event that's detailed in the cover art seemed as an afterthought.

My biggest complaint about the book really shouldn't be a complaint, but I can't help it: Sanderson draws the bow, knocking the arrow closely to the cheek - and when it flies, Tarmon Gaidon happens. That arrow gets drawn so tightly, the tension for the battle about to come so palpable... and then the book ends. Yes, I realize that means AMoL is going to start with a bang, but that also means I have to wait the fifteen months until it is out. Fifteen months of that internal tension... sigh.stjohn70http://www.blogger.com/profile/03421839277298328486noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7724878057661010394.post-15479261628700921702010-11-15T10:41:00.001-07:002010-11-15T10:51:33.988-07:00Review: Skyline

"Don't look up" is this film's tagline... It's supposed to mean, "Don't look up at the light," but I would argue that it means, "Don't look up at the movie screen." Man this was a horrible flick. On a scale of 1-5, I give it 1.5 - and that only because the special effects are really good.
[Warning, mild spoilers]
Plot: Implausible and cheesy. Makes Cloverfield look good. Entire movie consists of scream/run/hide/pout - rinse and repeat.

Characters: Universally unlikeable. They really work at making sure that you don't like these people... which I guess is good, because later in the movie I was cheering for the aliens to kill them off.

Special Effects: The only high mark. Bit of a cross between War of the Worlds and Independence Day style here.

The ending is atrocious. It's obvious that they planned this as having a sequel, and the ending is less fulfilling than Back to the Future II. Really.

At least I only wasted a matinée ticket price. Can I have my $6 back? I would recommend waiting until it's out on the Netflix/Redbox to watch it - you probably won't have to wait too long.stjohn70http://www.blogger.com/profile/03421839277298328486noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7724878057661010394.post-67377222545018978252010-10-20T14:45:00.002-06:002010-10-20T14:46:14.539-06:00Time For My Other Mistress

Leaving work in 15 minutes to drive to Anaheim for BlizzCon. So I'm going to run YetiCon for 2011 from beginning to end. Wow. I feel a bit like doctor Frahnkenshteen above.

This is my first time ever arranging such an event... okay, any event other than something like my son's birthday party - this should be marginally more complex. I'm going to be posting here the things I learn, the things with which I struggle, my victories and defeats.

First off... where the hell is the first off? Where do I begin? There is a lot to do! We've announced it over on Yes the Truth Hurts for next June/July - giving me 9 (ish) months to pull this off. And I've also started recruiting for some needed help as well - but much of that won't be needed until later.

So I've started working on a few areas:

Venue and date. Somewhat important [/sarcasm]. We have bids in from several locations that we're evaluating. From onsite locations (held inside a hotel), to offsite (need hotel in walking distance... fat guy walking distance at that, too) - there are several options that we're exploring based on features, convenience, availability and price. The bid window closes this Friday, and we'll decide from there. I have a representative from the local Visitors & Conventions Bureau working it with us. She'll actually drive us around to do site inspections, work with the venue management, etc.

Sponsors. As soon as the above is decided, we're going to board the sponsor train and hopefully it will be able to leave the station. I've got my guts and a guy who thinks he can do it to try and nail down some good prize support. Until then, I still have to work on a proper value proposition to get the sponsors on our side. May have some hurdles to clear based off YTTH 'rep' - but maybe it will help us with others.

Launch website. I've got some artwork already in, so starting to get the look and feel into place. Think YTTH, but not as ugly, lol. It will still probably just be a blog, but fully using the Blogger Pages functionality - we'll see if it's viable, mostly because I don't want to have to be bothered to code the whole damn thing and host it somewhere. Yeah, the cost is minimal, but it's another cost that eats into the Yeti pie. Also, there will be a subhosted blog just for the staff of Yeti that only they can read can all contribute.

We have some definite ideas about format and rules, but those are probably going to be the easiest thing to get done. I still need to line up swag, printing, and a dozen other things, but they're on hold for now.

My general timeline for now is to get the venue, date, & website completely done by the end of October and the sponsors started on immediately after. We won't be done with sponsors until ... well, until the first dice are rolled.

By the end of the year, I'll get registration setup, have the charity lined up, and publish test missions. We'll also be looking at the swag & printing at that time.

From there, I hope to have a better picture on what I need going forward. We'll see.

For now, I've just got to take on small bites - thinking of the whole thing makes my head swim. Oh yeah, and I've got to get my mini-power struggle with Andy done (no, it's not a big deal - but it is there). He is concerned (and perhaps rightly so) that Yes the Truth Hurts is the big draw for Yeti, and that if he isn't the TO, then it will be diminished in its drawing capabilities. I am concerned that I will do 99% of the work and if that is the case, then I need final say on the stuff and am the TO. Either way, it's still a YTTH production, and we hope to make the community better for it - locally and everywhere else tournaments are held.

Game 4 vs Michael J (finished 50/88, went 2-2 - I know because we were both 2-1 coming into this game)
As usual, at the end of the day I was running out of my ability/desire/memory to take pics during the game, so I have 2 for you. Yeehaw.

There's not a lot to learn from this game - except that if you're going to run mixed Space Wolves (which is totally feasible), then you've got to know how to support your own units when you play against a non-standard list (like mine).

His list - Space Wolves
Wolf Lord, PFist, SShield, WTail Talis, Runic, Saga of Bear, TWolf, 2 Fen Wolves
Rune Priest, Plasma Pistol, Chooser, LivLight, Jaws
Rune Priest, Term Armour, Chooser, LivLight, MurdHurricane
10 Grey Hunters, 2 melta, Drop Pod
3x 10 Grey Hunters, 2 melta, PFist, Drop Pod
Dreadnought, MM/HF, ExArm, Drop Pod
3 TWC, 1 reg, 1 SShield, 1 Pfist + SShield
2 x 5 Long Fangs, 4 Missiles

Primary Mission: Objectives
Secondary Mission: Victory Points
Tertiary Mission: Table Quarters

Deployment: Pitched Battle

I win roll and opt to go 2nd. This is the same mission as round 2 (randomly determined before round started), and I want a) objective grab ability and b) his pods to drop before I do. I use Dante's curse on his uber-Lord.

He deploys his Long Fangs in opposite corners with a Rune Priest to go with each squad. He also deploys a Grey Hunter squad with each Long Fang unit - having their pods drop empty. The TWC are in the middle between the two squads. (no pic)

Turn 1:
He doesn't move his existing squads, drops 2 pods together in front of Mephiston (with guys in them), 1 empty in my back corner objective to contest it unless I can kill it. Everyone tries to shoot up Mephiston, doing a wound.

I move Mephiston forward, and eat one squad (kill 6, squad runs, I catch, 2 more die to fearless wounds) - 2 models left.

Turn 2:
He gets another pod in and moves his Lord & TWC up to deal with Mephy, but makes a pretty critical error. He has to go through terrain to get to me and he's run his Fenrisian Wolves in front of the Lord - and they're the only models that can reach. I kill the last of the squad, plus both wolves - the Lord & TWC run... I so want to let them go and escort them off the table, but I have to try and catch them. Two TWC take fearless wounds.

I drop squads in around the table, shooting up his right Long Fangs and the squad that has dared to go after one of my objectives. Dante's squad precision drops behind the Long Fangs on the back left.
Here's the two pics I took - both at the same time - just after I dropped the units that arrived. Hard to see, but Mehpiston and the TWC are clustered up at the center.

In assault, Mephiston kills his Wolf Lord, and the TWC then take Meph down to 1 wound remaining. He really needed to take him out now to have a shot left in the game.

Turn 3:
His dread shows up now - not sure why this was last. His only assault elements are tied up. He shoots me. A lot. I lose 5 models in three different units. 2+ FNP is a bitch. He does not assault. I can understand his reasoning, but it was flawed. Yes, he isn't optimally geared for assault, and can possibly do more by double-tapping and then still being able to counter-assault when I charge him. But it allows me to get Furious Charge and have more attacks on my turn. He should have just shot assault weapons and tried what was available in assault.

On my turn I drop my last squad in the center to help out Mephiston if he needs it, or to support Dante's squad with the units he's going after, they shoot the dread and it dies. Other shooting kill some people, then I oblige him and assault. I wipe out the squad on my near left objective. Dante and unit separate and they take out the Grey Hunters while Dante kills the Long Fangs (the Rune Priest was locked out of combat) killing most of them. The two units on the back right eat the Grey Hunters and the Rune Priest, but three Long Fangs stick around. Mephiston kills two of the TWC then dies.

Turns 4+:
The game is basically over, he has a couple models locked in combat that are soon to die and a TWC with Storm Shield with 1 wound left.

I mop up and the results:

I win 4 objectives to none, 1895 vp to 990, and 3 table quarters to 1.
So after taking the Original Nipple-Wing to the NOVA Open, I decided to review what I learned about the Shiny Ones.

A - They can actually be quite competitive given the right scenarios
B - They have several shortcomings that when exploited leaves you with a sound, sound beating.

So I thought I'd take another crack at the list. This time not just to be 'fun' like the last one was, but to actually be able to compete with the beast.

First to go? Mephiston. I love the guy, he is truly a beast. But the army is designed to Deepstrike, and any unit that can't (or at least Outflank) is gone.
Next to go? My stubborn insistence that this is an "All Sanguinary Guard, all the time" army list.

So what do we add?
I still want Psychic defense/threat - so a Jump-Libby is making the trip.
I decided to beef up the Sanguinary Priests into mini-HQ's with Power weapons to take advantage of WS5.
I dropped three squads of Sang Guard, and I'm adding in two full squads of RAS. With Combat Squads, this gives me 7 potential scoring units.
I also saw SandWyrm's version of the list, and really like the inclusion of some MM/HF Landspeeders, so in they go.

What we're not adding?
Honour Guard. Yes they can be cheap and add another FNP bubble, but unless/until I take this to 2500 points, they're staying at home.
Vanguard Vets. Yes, they can attack when they Deepstrike. So what? Ok, I stand corrected (thx GraveMind), they do have Descent of Angels... I was only looking at their entries. I'll try a couple games with them, but they're still very expensive for what you get - and there's no unit discount on the special weapons. My gut feeling is that they'll come when the HG do.

Here's the version that I'm currently playing. It removes very few of the weaknesses of the original Nipple-Wing (because let's face it, how many power-weapons does one army really need?), while beefing it out quite a bit. It adds more threats and more units that the opponent has to deal with.
So I finally listened to the two podcasts from the NOVA Open. At the time, the Gamer's Lounge seemed to have a little bit more organization - and of course they had the ustream going. The 11th Company was also there, and while theirs seemed a bit more informal at the time, with post-processing they end up sounding much better.

I'm on both, but the 11th Company I'm not being overshadowed by the presence of Chumbalaya (jerk). I start talking at 1:56:35 on Episode 30.

Also, if by some miracle you came here first, and haven't been over to YTTH lately, we just announced YetiCon. Go forth and check it out!stjohn70http://www.blogger.com/profile/03421839277298328486noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7724878057661010394.post-11167073375651853142010-08-31T18:16:00.001-06:002010-08-31T18:26:09.978-06:00NOVA Open, Game 3 BatRep

Game 4 vs Sam P (finished 4/88 on day 1, 4-0. finished 5th overall with 5-2 final record)

Sam kicked my ass. There's not a lot of picks here, but I'll try to identify how he did it, what he did right, and what I did wrong. Yes, his dice were rolling well and mine were atrocious, but even without that, he still would've beaten me - it just wouldn't have been a tabling.

His List - Space Wolves
Njal Stormcaller
2x 5 Wolf Scouts, Melta, PW + WolfGuard w/ combi-flamer, PW
7 GH, flamer, rhino (Njal in here)
2 x 5 GH, flamer in HB Razback + WolfGuard
2 x 5 TWC (1 w/ Thunderhammer)
3 Landspeeders MM/HF
2x Predators Las/HB-sponson

Not the most efficient list I've ever seen - and to tell you the truth, based on the two previous games I had played, I was feeling kinda cocky. It seemed nobody knew how to deal with the 2+ FNP that mostly come in on turn 2 and only scatter 1d6". Because of that, I made some mistakes that cost me pretty dearly.

Primary Mission: Table Quarters
Secondary Mission: Objectives
Tertiary Mission: Victory Points

Deployment: Spearhead

Again, I won roll to go first and gave it to him. He castled back in his corner thinking I would have a little more on turn 1, but I just deployed Mephiston behind some cover.

Turn 1

Reincluding the same pic from above... I only have 3 pics from this game, so no need to be stingy. On his turn he moved forward, Njal's ride is the middle rhino. I brought Mephy up to play, hiding from shooting.

Turn 2

One unit of scouts come on, but I have nothing on the table yet, so they go play in the backfield.
He brings his speeders around and puts a couple wounds on Mephiston and then assaults him with his TWC. I get off Preferred Enemy, but Njal stops my Str10 power, ouch... stupid 3+. Mephy puts 4 wounds on the cav (pulls one model, puts wound on TH and normal guy), then dies.

Pic above shows just after my drops - got all but one squad. And my big mistake, right there in the middle... stupid, overconfident schmuck. I did try to drop them close to Njal's ride, but scattered next to a pred. This unit would've cost me the game if I had normal dice rolls. Also, I dropped the wrong unit to the far right - it should've been one of my two units without a powerfist or Sang Priest. Everything else should be over on the left side. At that point he would have the option of eating my right squad with his TWC or coming across to help out on the left - either option should've been a lose/lose. Man, hindsight is 20/20. So are new dice.

Anyhow, my shooting kills the whole scout squad (he probably could've saved the wolfguard, but he didn't try wound allocation there for some reason - maybe he knew he had me in the bag) and removes a weapon from the predator. 2 squads shooting (including 3 fusion pistols) manage to put one wound on the left TWC, so he pulled a normal guy. At this point, I'm thinking it could have gone better, but it aint terrible.

Turn 3
No pic. His other scout squad comes on and he puts brings them in to punish me for shooting away his previous squad. His 3 speeders all move in for HF/MM shots on the squad nearest me (you can see aftermath in pic below) and brings a razback along to help. His scouts kill a SG with a melta shot then prepare to assault. The speeders and HB razback and the squad inside (dismounted) kill all but one SG - and that was with me pulling some fancy wound allocation stuff (the 2 melta wounds went on my fusion pistol guy - so the other 3 dead were all failed 2+ saves). His back razback, the squad inside (dismounted) and the TWC lit up Dante's squad and killed the Sang Priest - stupid 3+ save'll get you every time. The TWC on the right did nothing except move a little to the left to wait for my last squad to drop. He ignored my squad in the center.
The scouts assault my SG, and with 4 guys having 2 attacks with mc-powerweapons and 2 powerfist attacks, I kill... 2 scouts. His attacks kill 2 of my guys - drawn combat. The TWC and the Razback squad assault Dante's squad - I manage to kill 4 guys from the razback squad and put one wound on a TWC and lose everyone except Dante and one SG. I win combat by 1, but both of his units stay. Oof. I should have Hit-n-Run here, then split and reassaulted.

My last squad arrives and I have to choose between hopeless situation on the left, or hopeless situation on the right. I chose the right because there I could at least shoot at something that mattered (the TWC). I drop right next to them. My other big mistake of the night is that I left the squad in the middle there - silly me, I thought my units on the right could handle their stuff. My lone SG left to deal with the 3 speeders and razback/unit goes nowhere because Njal's got the Jumppack-models-are-screwed power going. Shoots at the unit, kills a guy, but then fails to roll assault distance (because it's all dangerous/difficult terrain for me).
Shooting involved my new unit doing nothing to his TWC. Nothing. In the center, I assaulted his tank pred needing 4+ to hit with a bunch of Str5 guys (and a Str9 pfist) and shake it.
The scout assault sees my guys doin nuttin' and his kill an SG - I stay. In Dante's fight, he finishes off the razback squad, and the TWC put a wound on him and kill the other SG. No one's going anywhere.

Turn 4

His pred & TWC line up on my newly arrived SG unit shooting and killing two. Then the TWC assault. He shoots away my lone SG (still in the pic because I forgot to pull him).
The TWC kill 2 more SG (I do nothing), I flee combat but he catches and I save the wounds.
The TWC on the left (that you can't see) kill off Dante - there's one model left in their unit. The scouts and my SG swing ineffectively at each other (really, how long can SCOUTS last against close combat elite units???).

On my turn it's pretty clear, this is a table-quarters game, and I have 3 units on the table, he still has 11. But hey, let's make it a game anyway. My unit in the center jumps over to help the unit fighting the TWC - Furious Charge should be good for something, right?
No shooting, so I jump in and kill 2 TWC models, he kills the last of my other squad.
The SCOUTS finish off my 2 SG on the upper right.

Turns 5-6
He only has one unit of mine to worry about, and he sends his razbacks and predators my way. The glorious Wolf Scouts come down to help out vs my last remaining 3 models on the table.
He kills two of mine and I kill one more TWC - I run and get away almost to the table edge, he doesn't get within 6" so I rally on my turn.

I call the game and congratulate Sam.

He tabled me and I managed to kill... 1 scout unit with WG, one GH with WG, got his two TWC units below half, one scout unit below half, and damage one predator... w00t

He wins with 4 quarters to my none, able to grab two objectives, and 2000 vp to my 650(ish) vp

Quick note, Sam was an absolute pleasure to play against. Even though I was deep-striking in incorrect locations and not using my units properly and having terrible dice - it was amazing to see the clinic that he put on for me on isolating and removing certain threats, while ignoring others and accepting what may come (even though nothing did). Sam obviously knew his army and he showed it against me. It took a pretty serious miscalculation on his part, for him to fall apart against Dash's Orks on Day 2.

I hope you were all able to see (even with the lack of pics) the way to NOT play as demonstrated by yours truly, and the way TO play, as Sam did.stjohn70http://www.blogger.com/profile/03421839277298328486noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7724878057661010394.post-3189453830812472992010-08-30T15:20:00.002-06:002010-08-30T15:29:35.876-06:00NOVA Open, Game 2 BatRep

His List - Ultramarines:
2x 10 Tac Marines, Flamer/Missile in TL-Las Razback
5 Tac Marines, Sgt combi-flamer in TL-Las Razback
2x 2 Typhoon Landspeeders
Primary Mission: Objectives
Secondary Mission: Victory Points
Tertiary Mission: Table Quarters

Deployment: Pitched Battle

I win roll to go first and opt to have him go first - I want to make objective grabs last.

He deployed "okay" - not bad, but not great (pic up top). For true deepstrike defense with no template worries, everything should be clustered as close as possible, with some units out to prevent me from being in close melta range on the drop.

I deploy Mephiston all by his lonesome behind a hill.

Turn 1 (no pics cause not much happened)
He shoots what he can at Mephiston - which isn't much, I had a nice hill to hide him behind, and puts a wound on him.
I move up Mephy to a spot that makes him really hard to shoot.

Turn 2

I drop - focusing mostly on the left side, but spread out because there's just not a lot of AP2 in his army.
With shooting, Dante's squad shoots up the Librarian's squad causing him to make a save, which he promptly fails and dies (Dante's curse, ftw) and the squad runs off the table. While minorly important, this was emotionally crushing to Bob. I also killed one typhoon and shook the other and then blew the multimelta off one back speeder and shook the other - mebbe one or two marines died to squad shooting..
Mephy jumps out of cover for giggles and kills a squad, opting to ignore the Dread and penetrate deeper (mistake).

Turn 3

On his turn, the razbacks and predators shot at squads killing a couple, only putting one pred into Mephiston, giving him 1 more wound... ok, I accept. (At this point everything that could have, should have gotten into a razorback - and Mephiston should be d-e-a-d.)
He decided the dreads would work better as unit tarpits rather than shooting (good choice) and assaulted two of my units with them (one with, one without a pfist). They all stare at each other angrily.

I'm able to assault enough that I'm not worried about efficiency, so I start throwing units around in the backfield where the can do nothing except annoy some speeders, but claim objectives. Mephiston starts his 1 turn, 1 vehicle rampage - downing a pred. I also shoot the razback on the left and killed the occupants - he now has 2 scoring units left (about to be 1, from the assault on the right). The dread assaults go nowhere.

Turns 4 & 5

On his turn, he still mostly ignores Mephiston, shooting up Dante's squad (behind cover), he did shoot one MM at Meph and got him down to 1 wound left. His dread on the right comes up to help in the assault. My left squad finally remembers they have a pfist and kill the dread - time to start hunting!

Mephiston kills a pred turn, then a razback - I hunt down all his speeders except one squadron that's missing weapons. My squad in center stays with the dread - doing nothing to each other. He kills a couple more marines, but only kills one squad outright.

Turn 6

He sends his speeders over to contest objective in my back left, hoping to tie up unit in center with dread, and get the dread on the right to tie up a lone marine I have there to grab objective - but it's a lost cause... even if everything goes his way, I still have 2 squads within range of grabbing the forward left objective and he has nothing left to contest.

I send Mephiston after the dread in the center and bring it down, so the squad can sweep onto the objective in the center. I grab the back left objective and my one marine grabs his since his dread couldn't kill my other marine.

In the end he had a dread and two speeders left - I've lost one squad, 2 are below half, and Mephy is wounded.
So here's the next army I'm working on. Right now it's all proxies - I want to solidify my feel for the game before I buy that many more vehicles.
It's Blood Angels - and it's kind of AV13 MSU. Kind of... anyways, I don't feel the need to keep it secret, so here goes:
Note - this was inspired by several armies I saw at the NOVA Open. None of them had quite gone to this level, but a few were quite close... this is an amalgamation and distillation (oooh, 236 points in Scrabble!) of these armies.

Options: When I pointed out the army, it came to 1975 pts, so for grins I gave a dread the magna-grapple, and the talons dread the Hvy Flamer - those aren't necessary. But I do like them.

Thoughts: The army has long/med/short range shooting in abundance. The Assault Cannons can move 12" and still fire: forward for the added range, or obliquely for side armor shots. 7 TL-Assault Cannons, 3 Autocannons, 6 Lascannons, and 6 Heavy Bolters - all on move and fire platforms. The Libby provides cover, the dreads provide assault threats, counter-assaults, and general all around short-range threat. 4 Meltaguns back up the big guns for close range anti-armor. Small unit sizes means if they're getting out to shoot, I'd better be able to protect them ala dread in front or the triangle of doom with vehicles.

So what do you think?stjohn70http://www.blogger.com/profile/03421839277298328486noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7724878057661010394.post-24647951264144563292010-08-19T17:36:00.000-06:002010-08-19T17:36:55.116-06:00Searching for Mr Goodbar... er, Trueblood

I'm hoping that someone out there knows Joseph Trueblood. I played him on Sunday at the NOVA Open against his Blood Angels. I have some questions I'd like to ask. If you could direct him here or have him send me an email at john[at]yesthetruthhurts.com, that would be awesome.

His list (doing this from memory/pic now will double check list I have at home tonight):

Mephiston
Librarian
Sang Priest - nekkid
2 x 5 Assault Marines (NoJP), Melta, Razback w/ AssCan
2 x 6 Assault Marines (NoJP), Melta, Razback w/ AssCan
8 or 9 Scouts (there's 9 in pic, but w/ 8 comes to 1997 points, so am unsure)
3 Attack Bikes (2 MM, 1 HB)
2 LandSpeeders HvyFlam/MM
Baal Pred, AssCan + HB Spons
2 Vindicator

Primary Mission: Victory Points
Secondary Mission: Objectives
Tertiary Mission: Table Quarters
Deployment: Dawn of War

I won roll to go first and opted to do so, deploying Mehpiston and two SG units on the table at center... I mean, why not? He deployed Mephiston and tried to do 2 Assault Squads in their Razbacks. I told him that it sucks, but that the unit and the transport count as separate units - he wanted to doublecheck, so we grabbed a judge that confirmed what I said. So he deployed the one unit. This was his first mistake: he should have had it all come on together. Maybe have Mephiston on so that he can gain Wings - but far enough away from my Meph to not get charged.

He fails to Seize.

I move my squads slightly to the right. I don't want to give Meph a free meal - and I want to bait out his Vindicators.
He obliges me and brings his Vindi's on right in front of my squads and spreads his army. Another really big mistake. Yes, his weapons all only have 24" range, but he needed to bring everything in at the far side and use that 24" range to the best he can. His whole army shoots and I lose 1 SG model and a wound on Meph. He's holding his scouts and Baal in Outflank.

Turn 2

I get 2 of my 4 SG squads in - drop one on the left to tie up his army from supporting his left flank, and send a squad each to deal with each Vindi and the speeders - Mephiston goes for the Razback containing the Priest. I blow the weapon off one Vindi, stun the other, and down both speeders. Squad on the left kills the HB bike.

Mephiston assaults and destroys the Razback.

His weaponless Vindi tankshocks and gets outta Dodge, while Meph comes over to get a little Meph on Meph action going. With the Priest right there I know he's got me, but that's ok - I'm willing to trade Queens here. On the left he forms a circle of death for my squad - but even with all that shooting, a model still lives!

Meph goes in to play with himself - he gets off Preferred Enemy, I get off Str 10, we hood the other powers. With Furious Charge, he goes at Init 8, and gets 5 hits and does 4 wounds... I'm dead. Bummer, I at least wanted to put a couple wounds on him. He consolidates the wrong way - going onto hill that we determined is difficult terrain, but doesn't provide cover - he should have gone into the razorback wreck.

Turn 3

I get my last 2 units on and bring them down into the fray. My one model goes way out left and shakes a razback, while Dante and his squad drop next to another and nuke it. Around Mephiston, I create a Charlie Foxtrot of a mess, involving 3 of my squads and 4 of his. I shoot Mephiston a lot, putting 3 wounds on him.

Then I charge in, getting guys on the live Vindi, his assault squad (2 units), Mephiston (all 3 units), and his attack bikes - note my Priest in the center giving all squads Furious Charge. Mephiston kills 3 models from a unit of mine, but I nearly wipe out what he has left leaving 2 models from the assault squad that stay. Oh, and I failed to hurt the Vindi. This fight was really the key to the whole game.

On his turn, instead of running and gaining distance he brings his living razbacks and squads over to help, but to shoot, not to assault. His Scouts outflanked into my back left corner, his Baal came in near Dante's squad to shoot. Not much happened except me finishing off the assault without losing anyone.

Turn 4+

I spend the rest of the game chasing down his units, getting everything except 3 vehicles - all damaged: the Baal, a Vindi, and a Razorback.

Bah, having problems getting the rest of the pics onto my pc here ... will have to wait until later to upload them. But I did get the pic Monty requested - the hall pic. Note that the nearest row of tables is cutoff (you can see pplz heads). For detail purposes, the 40k players are close, the Fantasy are the furthest. The lowest 20 tables for 40k had felt for table base, the top 24 had painted/graveled terrain boards. Most terrain was pretty consistent. Also, this was just after Round 1, so if you see people playing near to the camera, don't worry, they weren't necessarily relegated to the lower tables.
But I lost spectacularly to Sam in round 3 because, unlike my other opponents, had A) had a good list and B) wasn't dazzled by my army deep-striking all around him. Not to say the other 3 were noobs or had bad lists, but they either didn't have the low AP guns or power weapons, or they just weren't able to isolate and remove threat elements.

On day 2, I was asked to play Joe Strongblood's Blood Angels for his placement round, because his opponent had left. He also had a decent army list and knew how to protect his stuff - he never gave me the chance to use my 2+ armor with FNP. It was a slaughter.

I knew this coming into the tournament. I had decided to take it as a fun list... and I had a TON of fun and got lots of comments on it.

So as a final warning:

DO NOT TAKE THIS LIST AND EXPECT TO DO WELL!
stjohn70http://www.blogger.com/profile/03421839277298328486noreply@blogger.com6
